A Recommendation from the Past

A Recommendation From the Past (Christmas in July)
Dos July - 2025

Looking at some old files, I came across a review I wrote more than ten years ago, which you might enjoy, also it might point you toward a "Winner".
Attached is a review of the current vintage by James Suckling.

2023 Root One Carmenere:
2023 Vintage Tasted: Feb 2024
A soft-textured carmenere showing black plums, currants, mulberries and dried herbs on the nose. It’s medium- to full-bodied, gentle and fruit-driven. Drink now.

Norm Bentley:

I have a Christmas present for you.  I rarely rave about wines or talk about my favorites very much, but I have admitted in the past that I really favor Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  But today I am going to give you the best piece of advice ever.  If you want to enjoy a wonderful bottle of red regularly for around $10 a bottle, it ain’t from California, it is from Chile.  I have written about the Root 1 Carmenere numerous times in the past, and it has been my “go to” everyday red for years.  We just enjoyed a bottle of the 2012 vintage recently and it may be the best one yet.  However, before I describe it, here are a couple of excerpts from previous reviews.

2009 Root 1 Carmenere

I really love spaghetti and at our house that may mean many different styles and sauces. The traditional Marinara with meat is my favorite, and we usually open a bottle of Chianti. The other night however, we chose the 2009 Root One Carmenere from Chile to pair with our spaghetti dinner. We have enjoyed several vintages of this wine in the past, including a few which I have written about.

Carmenere is the “Lost Grape of Bordeaux”, which was wiped out in France in the 1880’s due to Phylloxera, and was thought lost to the world. Originally grown in the Medoc of France, cuttings had been taken to Chile in the mid 1800’s and were growing along with Merlot, and thought to be a Merlot clone. A few decades ago the grape was re-identified in Chile as Carmenere rather than a strain of Merlot. Since then its popularity has continued to grow around the world.

This wine is a dark purplish red, with a heady nose and a solid backbone. The flavors suggest spice and plum, but are dominated with an intense blackberry presence which is absolutely delightful! The wine finishes strong with a peppery nuance sailing into mild vanilla flavored tannins. It is 90% Carmenere, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Syrah, and it comes in at 14% alcohol. This Carmenere was aged for ten months in a combination of French and American oak.

This wonderful bottle of wine could easily pass for a thirty dollar Bordeaux, and compliments almost any spicy meat or pasta dish.

Norm’s score is 89

2011 Root 1 Carmenere

Root One Carmenere has been a house favorite for several years now, and 2011 will be at least the fourth one which I have sampled.  I think of Carmenere as an in-between flavor, possessing the best of both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The “lost grape of Bordeaux” seems to have captured fans from both of those two more famous grape varieties.  It is rapidly achieving the status in Chile, which Malbec has already claimed in Argentina.  If you really enjoy red wines, and have not as yet sampled a Carmenere, then you are in for a treat.

The 2011 Root One Carmenere has a nose which leaps out of the bottle as soon as the cork is released.  The aromas of dark fruit and summer blackberry vines are prevalent.  The flavor is just as powerful, with big gobs of fruit suggesting blackberry and plum, with gentle under currents of vanilla and spice.  The finish is long and lingering and begs for another sip!  The alcohol content is 13.5%

We enjoyed the Root One with a big thick fillet from the grill, combined with a big salad containing everything from the garden, and a hot baked potato.  This is also a great wine for lasagna and other rich sauced pasta dishes.

Norm’s score is 88.

2012 Root 1 Carmenere

The color is a most beautiful inky shade of purple and when you open the wine, the aroma leaps out of the bottle and grabs you by the nose and won’t let go, filling the room with the essence of blackberry jam and Brer Rabbit’s briar patch.  And speaking of jam, the flavors abound with a thick jammy character smacking of blackberry and dark cherry with a hint of black currant.  The finish is spicy with a bit of pepper and just a touch of the earthy note which lingers until the next sip.  The wine is good in complexity as well as character and is in perfect balance between the fruit and the acidity.  The alcohol content is 13.5%.  Unlike previous vintages, this one is a blend of 85% Carmenere and 15% Syrah.  The Syrah may account for the slight earthy quality.

2022 Decoy California Merlot

 Norm's Tasting Notes

by Norm Bentley

The North Georgia Wine Advisor

2022 Decoy California Merlot
Uno July - 2025

The wine from Decoy is a second label for Duckhorn.  However most of the Decoy wines are not second rate, as demonstrated by this First Rate California Merlot!  The wine is 100% Merlot, with the grapes coming from Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties.

The wine attacks your senses with a bouquet bursting with black cherry and blueberries, and then drags you toward your first sip, which is also an attention getter!  The flavors swirl in the glass, with blueberry, plum, and black cherry in the forefront.  The finish is long, with sturdy tannins, and a mellow, rich send-off .  The alcohol content is 14.1% and Norm's score is 92.

Of course, The Chardonnay Queen, and I enjoyed this Merlot with a thick, medium rare fillet from the grill. but I would also recommend it for Prime Rib, or Lamb Chops.  If you have not sampled a Merlot recently, this would be a wise choice.

score: 92

2022 Francis Ford Coppola Diamond Collection Claret

 Norm's Tasting Notes

by Norm Bentley

The North Georgia Wine Advisor

2022 Francis Ford Coppola Diamond Collection Claret
Dos June - 2025

The British, many centuries ago used the word Claret when speaking of fine French Bordeaux Chateau and Estates Wines, blending two or more of the red Bordeaux grapes to produce superior wines.  The wines were either predominately Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot with other grapes added for finesse, which is the case with the Coppola Claret.  The difference is that the Coppola is in the twenty dollar range.  But year after year it is a "Winner"!

The complex array of flavors includes black cherry, blackberry, and black plum with mild notes of vanilla and cocoa, also mild tannins and a socko finish.  The alcohol content is 13.5% and Norm's score is 91

Of course, The Chardonnay Queen, and I enjoyed this Claret with a thick chunk of beef from the grill. but I would also recommend it for Rack of Lamb, or Osso Bucco.

score: 91
price : $16 - $21

2023 Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc

 Norm's Tasting Notes

by Norm Bentley

The North Georgia Wine Advisor

2023 Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc
Uno June - 2025

Fried Red Snapper and Grilled Shrimp make for a really good meal.  Add a bottle of Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, and you have a great meal!  When the fish and shrimp are "Fresh Catch of the Day', its simply wonderful!

The Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc is neither "California Style Grassy" nor "New Zealand Style Grapefruity".  It is a little grassy and a little citrusy, a little fruity, and a little crisp.  It is big on accents of Myer Lemon, Orange Blossoms, and Ripe Melon, and it is real big on flavor and clean finish!  The alcohol content is 13.8%. and Norm's score is 91.

This is a terrific wine for any kind of seafood, prepared in any style, from hot to cold, or even raw!

score: 91
price : $17 - $22

We enjoyed our Fume Blanc with a sauced dish of Salmon and Shrimp,  Artichoke, and a fresh baked Baguette.  This fresh and crisp white opens with a nose of citrus and tropical fruit.  The flavors include Myer lemon, stonefruit, and maybe a hint of grapefruit.  The finish is clean, and sails off into the night!  The alcohol content is 13.9%. and Norm's score is 90.

The previous vintage was a 2019 with a 91 score, while this 2023 gets a 90. This is definitely a "Go To" white wine for almost any food or occasion, including "Back Porch Sipping"

In 2020 I published a list of the Top Wines that I had tasted during that year which I had scored above 90.  I am re-tasting several of the current vintages of those wines to see how they rate five years later.  This Sterling Merlot is the second from that list for this year.  The complete Top Twenty from 2020 is shown below.

2019 Sterling Heritage Collection Napa Merlot:

In a bit of a departure from our traditional Easter Dinner, The Chardonnay Queen prepared an excellent Roasted Beef for our feast. The Sterling Merlot was perfect!  A deep and complex merlot with ripe cherries, currants, and a hint of blackberry, the 2019 Sterling Merlot has staying power, and a memorable finish, which begs for another sip!  The alcohol content is 14.7%. and Norm's score is 91.

The previous vintage was a 2016 with a 90 score, while this 2019 gets a 91.  A lot of other merlots wish they tasted like this one.
