How Wines are Scored

HOW WINES ARE SCORED

Having been in the wine business for many years, and also having been a judge at wine competitions, I am often asked what goes into scoring a wine. The first thing that should be noted is that all opinions about wine are just that, opinions. The most important opinion is yours. If you like the wine, then that is the only opinion that really counts.  When scoring wines the majority of opinions are based on a one to one hundred scale, while some use a more simple one to ten scale.

A few basics when scoring are that first the taste should be reflective of the grape variety it represents.  Secondly, the wine should have good balance between the fruit and the acidity.  Third, would be how well the wine compares to other examples of the same variety, and of course, the most important factor is that the wine is pleasing to the palate.

I  receive sample bottles of wine from wineries and their marketing agencies, as well as making purchases of my own at local retail outlets.  My criteria is to write about wines which I feel are in the 85 and up category on the one to one hundred scale. I do not write about wines that are inferior because I would rather write about wines which are enjoyable, and in today’s market place, there are many to choose from. When I was in retail, I used to tell customers, “I taste a lot of bad wines so that you don’t have to.”

Today there are thousands of good wines to choose from, and many are in the ten to twenty dollar range which fits most people’s pocketbooks. I hope that Norm’s Tasting Notes is a useful guide to help make your dinner or special occasion a successful one.

2013 Kenwood Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc

2013 Kenwood Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc
#nb-27-14
The hot summer air begs for a cool, crisp glass of wine to soothe the senses, and the 2013 Kenwood Sauvignon Blanc does just that.  Bright and refreshing with a clean finish, it is the perfect summertime wine for almost any occasion.

We opened a bottle a few nights ago on one of those hot humid days so typical of Georgia in July.  The aroma leapt out of the bottle with the promise of melon and tropical fruit in its forecast.  The flavors were a mix of melon, pineapple, and lemon grassiness with a mild citrus flirtation.  The wine was fermented in stainless steel to produce a very clean finish, which begs for another sip!  The alcohol content is 13.5%.

This wine would be an excellent companion for any summer salad, or great for a picnic featuring cold fried chicken,   Norm's score is 88.

Score: 88
Price: $10 - $14

2011 Trapiche Broquel Mendoza Malbec

2011 Trapiche Broquel Malbec
#nb-26-14

The wines from the Mendoza Province in Argentina have established themselves as value priced quality wines with a lot of character, with Malbec being a leader in the array.  The 2011 Trapiche Broquel Malbec has a lot of character, and could pass for a much more expensive bottle than its modest price.

This Malbec opens with heady aromas laden with  jammy dark fruit and bursting with the scent of blackberries.  There are powerful flavors of blackberry and black cherry highlighted by herbal tones and a hint of pepper.  The finish is filled with vanilla oak, soft tannins, and a socko fruit climax which sails on into the night.  The wine has big fruit, pleasant acidity, and a lot of depth.  The alcohol content is 14.5%.

We paired this big red with a nice rare fillet, fresh bread and a garden salad brimming with tomatoes.  It was a nice combination. The Broquel would also make a good companion for venison or lamb.  Norm's score is 89.

Score: 89
Price: $11 - $15

2012 Mark West California Pinot Noir

2012 Mark West California Pinot Noir
#nb-25-14

Which wine is the right companion for pot-roast on Wednesday night?  How about a decent ten dollar Pinot Noir from the winery sometimes referred to as the "King of the Ten Dollar Pinot Noir"?  The 2012 California Pinot Noir from Mark West was the right choice for our recent Wednesday night supper.  Just the right amount of sophistication and complexity, without being too top-shelf for pot-roast.

It is often hard to find an acceptable Pinot Noir for twenty dollars, much less ten, but I have had numerous past vintages of Mark West Pinot Noir that fit the bill.  The 2012 California Pinot Noir has a bright and abundant nose of berries with a floral background, and a hint of spice.  The flavors swirl with a dominance of black cherry complemented by the presence of plum and a touch of strawberry.  The finish is mild but sturdy with an alcohol content of 13.8%.  Norm's score is 87.

Score: 87
