2014 Warm Springs Old Atlanta Red Muscadine

Norm's Tasting Notes

2014 Warm Springs Old Atlanta Red Muscadine
#nb-51-16

Well here we are, just a couple of days before Christmas, and I have already given you some suggestions for wines for Christmas dinner, so now I'm going to make a suggestion for your next picnic lunch.  A good friend of mine gave me a bottle of Muscadine wine he picked up during a visit he had made to Warm Springs, Georgia and Franklin Roosevelt's Little White House. We paired it up with Fried Chicken, Old Fashioned Baked Beans, Southern Potato Salad, and Coleslaw for a delightful picnic lunch, "Southern Style", and guess what? We ain't in Kansas no more Toto.

The Old Atlanta Red opens up as it should with a broadcast of spicy, grapey aromas, which lead into juicy sweet fruit with a tangy background, and a large dose of sugar.  As a boy I spent a lot of time in the Georgia woods exploring, and munching on juicy thick-skinned Muscadines which grew wild everywhere, especially down by the creeks with the vines reaching high up into the oak and poplar trees along the creek banks.  After a few dozen of the hot sweet grapes, we would swing out over the creek on one of the thick vines and drop into the water for a cool refreshing dip.

The Warm Springs Muscadine Wine takes me back down memory road, and not only reminds me of those wild grapes, but also of some of the syrupy sweet home-made Muscadine wine one of my great aunts used to make.  The Old Atlanta Red also tasted pretty good with our fried chicken picnic lunch.

2014 Kenwood Sonoma County Chardonnay

Norm's Tasting Notes
by: Norm Bentley

2014 Kenwood Sonoma County Chardonnay
#nb-49-16

This one is a "Chardonnay Queen" pick.  The other night she brought me a glass before dinner and said, "Honey, try this one, I think its pretty good!"  Well of course she knows her Chardonnay, and this was one she had bought on sale at a local wine retailer who has a wine manager who knows his stuff, having been in the business for quite sometime.  I was not surprised since we have enjoyed Kenwood Chardonnay numerous times in the past.  After a little research, I found that about 70% of the grapes in this bottle came from Russian River, which is one of my absolute favorite growing areas.

The wine opens with a heady nose, which broadcasts the scent of mellow apple and a splash of vanilla.  The flavors are well rounded with a commanding presence of apple backed by a suggestion of tropical fruit, and a hint of mild oak with a touch of spice.  The finish is crisp and and sails on into the night.  The alcohol content is 13.5% and Norm's score is 89.

I enjoyed the Kenwood Chardonnay as a before dinner aperitif, but recognized at once that it would be an excellent companion for most any fowl or seafood fare.

price : $11- $15
score:  89
