2015 Coppola Diamond Collection Syrah/Shiraz

The Diamond Series from Francis Ford Coppola continues to be a quality wine label for a fair price, with a large variety of wines to choose from. This was my first experience with their Syrah/Shiraz red blend, and I was suitably impressed. The two grapes are of course kindred, and in some ways much the same. Syrah is known for its peppery earthiness, while Shiraz is famous for its fruity, juicy qualities, which make for a great blend.
The color is deep garnet with a fragrant, spicy nose suggesting a big basket full of dark ripe fruit. The flavor is cherry, backed by red raspberry and black currant, with a touch of vanilla. The wine is complex with finesse and backbone, held together by its earthy core. The finish is fruity, yet dry, with a lingering farewell. The alcohol content is 13.5%, and Norm's score is 88.
This wine is perfect with grilled meats, or an Italian classic like Eggplant Parmesan. It would also pair well with lasagna or cannelloni.
