2022 Maison Louis Latour Pouilly Fussie

 Norm's Tasting Notes

2022 Maison Louis Latour Pouilly Fuisse
#22-2024

The Chardonnay Queen asked for Peel and Eat Shrimp for her birthday dinner, which we usually serve with beer.  But after all, it was her birthday, so of course, we opened a good bottle of Chardonnay.  In this case a 2022 Pouilly Fuisse from Maison Louis Latour from the Maconnais of Burgundy.  It was a better choice than beer for sure.

I have always felt that the wines from Pouilly Fuisse were a good choice when choosing a Chardonnay wine.  They seem more delicate, and yet also complex, when compared to other Chardonnay wines.  The 2022 offering from Maison Louis Latour has a fragrant bouquet, and a kaleidoscope of flavors, ranging from apple and pear, to a mild melon and citrus combination.  The background is vanilla with a touch of mineral.  It has a creamy texture, and a finish which begs for another sip.  The alcohol content is 13.5%. and Norm's score is 92.

The wine was excellent with boiled shrimp and spicy cocktail sauce, but to do it justice, it should be paired with broiled shellfish (especially lobster) served with drawn butter!

score: 92
price : $28 - $35

2023 LaCrema Monterey Pinot Noir

 Norm's Tasting Notes

2023 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir
#21-2024

At a recent outing to a local eatery, the Chardonnay Queen and I ordered a split ticket.  She had the grilled salmon and I indulged in a choice fillet.  The wine best suited for both is, and was, a lighter style Pinot Noir, such as the LaCrema Monterey Pinot.

This is a fairly light Pinot Noir, but still stands up well to food.  It has the scent of cherries and ripe plums, and has flavors of cherry, raspberry and a hint of strawberry.  The alcohol content is 13.5% and Norm's score is 89.

This wine was very good with both salmon and steak, and would also be a good companion for Italian pasta dishes, especially Lasagna.

score: 89
price : $18 - $23

2019 Hahn GSM California Red Blend

 Norm's Tasting Notes

2019 Hahn GSM California Red Blend
#20-2024

Red Blends are very popular, and the styles vary, but often seem more French than American.  When we paired the Hahn GSM (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) with thick, center cut pork chops from the grill, the Chardonnay Queen exclaimed, "This is Lip-Smacking Good!" I thought so as well.

This is a fragrant and succulent, jammy wine, which grabs your nose, as well as your palate, in a sensuous tango of passion!  The flavors are blackberry, black raspberry, and a small dose of cherry, which sail off into the night.  This one definitely "begs for another sip!"  The alcohol content is 14.5%. and Norm's score is 91.

The Hahn GSM would be great with any grilled meat, or red-sauced pasta dish, and would also make a great companion for Paella or Cioppino.

score: 91
price : $12 - $17

2023 Geyser Peak California Sauvignon Blanc

 Norm's Tasting Notes

2023 Geyser Peak California Sauvignon Blanc
#19-2024

I always feel that Sauvignon Blanc is best in springtime, whether at a picnic, or brunch.  The 2023 Geyser Peak Sauvignon Blanc was also a good companion for our grilled salmon the other night.

The 2023 Geyser Peak is refreshing and fills the air with a citrusy aroma, opening into some juicy flavors of lime, apple, and a bit of stone fruit.  The finish is clean with a good balance of acidity against the fruit.  The alcohol content is 12.5%, and Norm's score is 88.

The Geyser Peak is a good choice for seafood salad, or just a big platter of cheese and crackers.

score: 88
price: $11 - $15

2022 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec

 Norm's Tasting Notes

2022 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec
#18-2024

Whether you are grilling meat on the grill, or preparing a hearty stew, you can't go wrong by pairing the meal with a bottle of Argentinian Malbec.  One which I have commented on several times in the past, and bring to your attention once again, is the Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec, this one, a 2022 vintage.  It remains as one of the best values in the market place for more than a decade now.  The current vintage is in the eleven to fifteen dollar range.

The flavors showcase black cherry, currants and a touch of plum, with an undertone of peppery spice.  The finish lingers on the palate, with mellow oak, and a complex and satisfying boldness which is just right.  The alcohol content is 13.5%, and Norm's score is 89.

If you would like another dinner suggestion rather that meat, try it with Eggplant Parmesan and Angel Hair Pasta.

score: 89
price : $11 - $15
