2008 Santa Rita 120 Cabernet Sauvignon

In my younger years, a simple meal with a bottle of "Dago Red" was all it took to have an enjoyable evening. To me "Dago Red" always meant an inexpensive bottle of red wine, many times a cheap Chianti. Last night we enjoyed a simple meal of grilled pork chops and a bottle of "Dago Red" from Chile. My apologies to Italy.

The 2008 Santa Rita 120 Cabernet Sauvignon is as good as any bottle of wine you are likely to find in its price range, and better than most. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Central Valley of Chile, and comes in at 13.7 % alcohol. The flavor is typical for Cabernet Sauvignon and swirls with cherry and dark berries. It is complex with a lot of fruit and finishes with a little touch of olive, and mellow tannins. It lingers on the palate and suggests another sip, with or without the food.

I used to say that the best characteristic in an inexpensive wine "was an absence of bad characteristics'. The Santa Rita goes far beyond that, and would stand up well against many Cabernets in the ten to fifteen dollar range. Chile may be the best place to look for that "Dago Red"!

This was an excellent match for our grilled pork chops, and would pair well with any grilled meat or red sauced pasta. Norm's score is an 86.
