Robert Mondavi has always meant Napa Wines.  California's Napa Valley wine region is located north of San Pablo Bay, to the north-east of San Francisco, and is formed by the Napa River, which flows between the Vacas Mountains in the east, and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west.  The valley runs north-west to south-east for about thirty five miles, and is one of the prettiest spots in the world.  An old slogan for the area is, "Napa Valley, where wine is bottled poetry".

The 2011 Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is true to the region, and true in its varietal character.  The wine opens with aromas of sweet black cherry and plum, which lead to flavors of cherry and juicy blackberry, framed with a background of cassis, and a touch of vanilla oak.  The finish is long and smooth, and the alcohol content is 14%.

We enjoyed a bottle with friends during the holidays as an aperitif with some stout cheddar cheese and water crackers.  It would, of course, make a good companion for steak, or any other grilled meat, as well.  Norm's score is 89.

Score: 89

Price: $19-$24
