2013 Ruffino Ducale Riserva (Tan Label)

The people at Ruffino have been making Chianti for a very long time, and they have been producing this particular label for ninety years now.  This 90th anniversary vintage is a Tuscan blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The magnificent heritage behind this bottle of wine is awe-inspiring, and to me, like an old friend, since I have been enjoying it for most of my life.

The nose is aggressive, yet elegant, with notes of cherries and violets in the forefront.  The flavors are robust yet serene, featuring sweet cherry, plum and dark berries with an under current of peppery spice leading to a smooth finish with hints of vanilla and toasty oak.  The finish is merely an invitation for the next sip to start the process once again.  The alcohol content is 13.5% and Norm's score is 90.

This wine is perfect for any Italian veal dish, especially Veal Marsala.  If you cannot find good veal, pair it with a juicy steak with a side of Spaghetti Marinara, and a Caesar Salad, complete with warm baguette.

score: 90
price: $19 - $24
