2014 Root 1 Carmenere

Two years ago I wrote about a Carmenere (The Lost Grape of Bordeaux) from the Chilean winery Root 1.  It was a favorite then, and it still is now.  The current Root 1 Carmenere is from 2014, and we enjoyed a bottle the other night with a New York Strip straight from the grill.

The wine is noted for its dark purple color, and a nose which explodes with jammy fruit.  The flavor is a healthy mix of raspberry and blackberry, with a subtle hint of cherry.  The finish is strong and lingering, with a good balance of fruit and acidity.  The alcohol content is 13.5%, and Norm's score is 89.

Perfect for a thick, juicy, medium rare steak, this Carmenere is also a good choice for Spaghetti Marinara, or a hearty beef or venison stew.

score: 89
price: $10 - $14
