2014 Rodney Strong Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
#nb-50-17

As a disciple of California Cabs, it was my pleasure to finish off the year with another great example of California Cabernet Sauvignon.  Our Christmas dinner with friends was prime rib, accompanied by a bottle of 2014 Rodney Strong Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a long time favorite of mine and the Chardonnay Queen.

I told our friends at the dinner table, "if you ever wondered what a Cab is supposed to taste like, it is just like this one".  The nose is heady and the flavors are rich and full, and continue to grow in the glass.  There are equal amounts of cherry, currant and blackberry, backed by earth tones which lead into a mellow oak finish, which sails off into the night.  At nearly four years old, with eighteen months in the barrel before bottling, the wine is still young enough to get better for several more years, if you care to wait.  The alcohol content is 14.5%, and Norm's score is 93.

I don't know how this wine could be any better with anything other than our superb prime rib, but of course it would pair well with a multitude of grilled meats and hearty stews, and would be excellent after dinner with a slice of extra sharp cheddar!

price: $19 - $24
score - 93
